Birthday party invitation wording: 22 examples by age

Birthday invitation wording for kids, teens, milestone adults and surprise parties, plus the practical details guests actually need before replying.

Birthday wording changes far more by age than by formality. A first birthday invitation is written for parents, a sixteenth is written for the guest of honour to be seen sharing, and a fiftieth is usually trying to say "no gifts" without sounding like it means the opposite.

First birthdays

Our little one is turning one. Join us for cake, chaos and a very short attention span.

One whole year of Yusuf. Come celebrate with us on Saturday, 3:00 to 5:00.

Alhamdulillah, Amina is one. Please join our family for lunch and duas.

Parents planning naps need an end time and a start time. Give both.

Ages two to nine

Sana is turning five. Bring your dancing shoes and your appetite. Saturday 2:00 to 4:00 at the park pavilion.

Dinosaurs, cake and one very excited six-year-old. Come roar with us.

Zayn is turning four. Drop-off party for ages three to six, 10:00 to 12:00. Lunch provided.

Join us for Layla's seventh birthday. Pool party, so bring a towel and a change of clothes.

For this age group, the wording is half the job and the logistics are the other half. Say whether it is drop-off or stay, name the end time, and ask about allergies in the reply rather than in the invitation.

Tweens and teens

Ibrahim is turning 13. Pizza, games and absolutely no parents in the room. Saturday from 6.

Come celebrate Maryam turning 15. Music, food, and we are going until 10.

Sweet 16, and you are invited. Saturday the 12th, 7pm. Dress up.

Eighteenth and twenty-first

Eighteen years in the making. Join us to celebrate Adam on Saturday the 12th.

Hana is turning 21. Dinner at 8, then wherever the night takes us. Reply by the 4th so we can book the table.

Milestone adult birthdays

Thirty. We are not making a fuss, we are just making dinner. Join us on the 12th.

Forty looks good on him. Join us for an evening of food, drinks and stories Omar would rather we did not tell.

Fifty years, and still the first one on the dance floor. Come celebrate with Fatima on Saturday the 12th.

Please join us for dinner in honour of Yusuf's sixtieth birthday. Your presence is the only gift we are asking for.

Surprise parties

Put the secrecy instruction first, before the details, because that is the part people skim past and then ruin.

Shhh. It is a surprise. Please arrive by 6:45. Nadia will be here at 7:00.

Surprise party for Kamran's fortieth. Please do not post, text or mention this to him. Doors at 7, he arrives at 7:30.

Lines that handle the awkward bits

Your company is the only present we want. Please, no gifts.

If you would like to give something, we are collecting for the local food bank in place of gifts.

This one is adults only, so we can all finish a sentence. We hope you understand.

Bring a dish if you like, and tell us what you are bringing when you reply so we do not end up with nine bowls of hummus.

The details guests actually need

• Start and end time. Especially for children's parties and anything on a school night.
• Whether parents stay. The single most common question hosts get asked.
• Food. Full meal, cake only, or bring a dish. People plan their day around this.
• Parking or entry instructions if the venue is at all confusing.
• A reply request with a date and a single way to answer.
